Access to the internet is a modern day essential. It can be difficult to pay or commit to a 12- or 24-month contract if you are in receipt of benefits or universal credit. The cost-of-living crisis has made things even harder. Almost everyone is looking at ways to lower their bills. There are a few things you can do to get connected without spending a fortune.

Ofcom is the communications regulator for the UK. Ofcom is encouraging Broadband providers to offer cheaper tariffs to people that get certain benefits. Ofcom calls this 'Social Tariffs'.

Having access to the internet can help you to:

  • find a job,
  • find community groups for support,
  • access further education,
  • help you plan travel,
  • online banking and to
  • find information from the Derbyshire Local Offer.

There are also social benefits from having internet access. You might find forums or discussion groups that talk about things you find interesting. This can help you to make friends. There are also many social groups or websites which can help you to improve your health and diet. This can contribute to your overall wellbeing.

It is important to stay safe online and be aware of the risks when talking to people you might not know. Get Safe Online has useful information about online safety.

What Broadband providers offer this?

There are many broadband providers who offer a 'Social Tariff' broadband package. Ofcom publishes a table of providers, the expected speeds, contract terms, and prices you can expect to pay. Ofcom includes direct links to the Broadband Providers' webpages dedicated to 'Social Tariffs'.

What is the cost?

The cost of service will differ depending on the provider you choose. You should check the websites of the providers and compare them to find the most suitable package for your needs.

Each provider's offering is a little different. Some offer a 30-day rolling contract which could be a better alternative to a 12 or 24-month contract. Some providers offer a minimum 12-month contract term that you can cancel at any time without cost, but only if your situation changes. It is useful to check contract terms before signing up.

What sort of service should I expect for the cost?

The service depends on the package you choose for your needs. Each provider's service will be different. Each of the providers are well known, trusted businesses. This means that they should have a service agreement in place which tells you what service to expect.

When you view and commit to purchasing broadband, you will be told what the highest and lowest expected speeds are. You are within your rights to contact the provider to query your broadband performance if you don’t think it is working as expected.

What is the eligibility criteria?

The eligibility criteria differ depending on the provider you choose. The provider websites display the eligibility criteria. On an annual basis, the providers will check with you to find out if you are still eligible to receive 'Social Tariff' broadband. If you are no longer eligible, the provider will increase the price you pay.

If you know that your eligibility has expired or is due to expire, you should contact them to discuss your options to avoid any unexpected price increases. It is useful to understand the eligibility criteria in full. You should also understand how the provider will check your eligibility, before you sign up.

Each company has its own list of benefit criteria, but all include Universal Credit. Others may include:

  • Universal Credit
  • Pension Credit
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income Support
