School attendance

All pupils should attend school on every occasion that it is open. They should only be absent for an acceptable reason authorised by the head teacher, unless they have an acceptable reason for absence. When attendance drops below 90%, this is persistent absence. Schools should take action to support parents to improve attendance. Schools work with the parents/carers to improve attendance where there are concerns. If this has failed, we undertake legal measures on behalf of schools. These are parent responsibility measures.

Children Missing Education

There are 2 categories:

  • Children Missing Education (CME) - Derbyshire children whose whereabouts are unknown to us.
  • Without a School Place (WASP) - Children who have a home address in Derbyshire but do not currently have a school place.

We have a statutory duty to collect and track data for children missing from education. We take legal measures where needed when a child does not have full-time suitable education in place.

Child Employment

When a school age child works part time they must be registered with the local authority. The child must hold a work permit. It is the employer’s responsibility to apply for the permit. They must also provide a list of tasks the child will do together, with a risk assessment for those tasks.

For more information about regulations and how to apply for a permit, please visit:

Licensing of children in entertainment, modelling and paid sporting activities
Children who take part in public performances, or paid sport may need a license from their local authority. This applies from birth until the last friday in June in the school year when they reach their 16th birthday.

For more information about regulations and how to apply for a license, please visit:

Chaperones for children in entertainment and activities

A chaperone must supervise children if they are performing, rehearsing during the performance period, or taking part in an activity. The chaperone must be in place at all times. A chaperone is not needed if a child is under the direct care of their parent, a teacher from their school, or their home tutor. Chaperones must hold a licence issued by the Local Authority.
