Understanding the term “Carer”

According to the SEND Code of Practice, the term carer describes anyone who provides care or support to a child or young person with special educational needs or disabilities.

Derbyshire County Council has spoken with local residents who support family members, friends or loved ones, and many have told us that words like “carer” or “unpaid carer” do not always feel personal or reflective of their relationship. Some people prefer to be known first as a parent, partner, relative or friend.

However, the term carer is still important. It is the word used in national guidance and legislation, and it connects people to specific rights, support, assessments and benefits. Because of this, we continue to use the word carer when referring to services or support that are legally defined, while also recognising the individual identities and preferences of the people providing care.

Supporting carers in our community

Caring for someone can be rewarding, but it often comes with challenges that require the right support and information. This dedicated space on the Local Offer has been designed to help young carers, adult carers, or parent carers find clear, up-to-date guidance and resources.

In the following sections, you will discover practical advice, details of commissioned services, and links to useful organisations. This content has been co-produced with carers to ensure it reflects what matters most to you.

Our aim is to make it easier for you to access help, understand available support, and connect with the people and services that can make a difference.
